The reference photo used for this painting was taken in Whiteshell Provincial Park, Manitoba near the Pinawa Channel. The channel was used by French fur traders seeking an alternate waterway to bypass dangerous rapids at Seven Sisters on the Winnipeg River. First Nation people named it “pinnowok,” meaning “calm or sheltered waters” and is known today as Pinawa.
