My mind’s eye saw Zetetic for months, and I believe it was influenced by primitive icon forms. When I started to paint, the colors became a stronger reference and took some of the imagery. It became a struggle which I had to block out, so I did a lot of looking and turning until I felt comfortable with my exploration of icon, nature and stress within the single work.

I sometimes feel it and see it and paint it; other times I paint it, feel it and see it. Neither situation is entirely pure, and frankly I hold no preference. My work contains fluctuations now that refer to nature and space, and these areas contain ever-changing focuses, as I love the idea of the ‘rotating point of view.’

Frankly nothing seems simplistic to me – there is layer over layer over layer. Seeing to me means noticing complexities that are in every stone, every seed, and every wave – it is all very busy.

The mission of the South Carolina Arts Commission is to promote access to the arts and support the cultivation of creativity in South Carolina. We envision a South Carolina where the arts are valued and all people benefit from a variety of creative experiences.

A state agency created by the South Carolina General Assembly in 1967, the SCAC works to increase public participation in the arts through grants, direct programs, staff assistance and partnerships in artist development, arts industry, arts learning, creative placemaking, and folklife and traditional arts. Headquartered in Columbia, S.C., the SCAC is funded by the state of South Carolina, by the federal government through the National Endowment for the Arts, and other sources.
