I spent the academic year 1971-72 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where I had a studio and concentrated on screen prints. The Station was not done at that time, but was completed a couple of years later back in New York (where I am a Professor of Art at the State University of New York at Oswego). However, the original photograph that keyed off the work was of a real station that existed in Myrtle Beach and caught my fancy as my eye roamed over that city. I have used numerous references in other works to Myrtle Beach structures and phenomena, but this is the only case where a single structure so dominates the image. Part of the image is reproduced photographically from the original snapshot while other parts have been drawn, re-arranged, and imagined. This screen print went through approximately eight stages with up to 30-35 colors printed, and I have kept a set of the stage prints as well as some stencil material which demonstrates the building process.
