“At both Rutgers and New York University my major fields of study were painting, sculpture and printmaking. Upon graduation I worked as a potter in New York City; first I maintained a studio “The Pottery” on East Sixth Street; subsequently shared a loft on Canal Street. Upon moving to Hartsville, SC, In 1974. I maintained a studio where I produced functional ceramics and sculpture constructed with wheel thrown components.
In January of 1979, I entered the College of Architecture of Clemson University. While in graduate school, my studio activity shifted from functional clay to ceramic sculpture. During this time I integrated my technical skills learned as functional potter with my personal imagery.
The knowledge gained while working with functional ceramics enabled me to proceed with a great deal of control when developing these images.
The skeleton of the structures has been constructed from clay and fiber. The clay is formulated, extruded, formed and fired in order to create the desired surfaces and effect. The flat painted areas are of either paper or metal. Occasionally the metal planes are encrusted with metal, beads or fiber. Paint is utilized to alternately accentuate the camouflage the dimensionality. I have taken license to incorporate any material on the basis of my perception of its suitability to the image.
These objects have their roots in my experiences and my need to comprehend the structure of the physical world. They also function as connective tissue between myself and those makers of other
