Interior with Chairs included in the South Carolina Arts Commission’s State Art Collection, is the story of one chair that was purchased for one dollar. I think at that time the price impressed me the most. It took a lot of living around, sitting on, and several coats of white paint before the chair inspired me. First came some pencil drawings with the chair inside, then outside in weeds before the creative struggle to say something about my dollar chair began to develop. The first painting was Interior with Chairs which has three chairs in a row with one in the front turned in the opposite direction. Beside this chair on the floor is an open book. Perhaps it was the drawing and re-drawing and moving the one chair around that inspired this roundel.

The mission of the South Carolina Arts Commission is to promote access to the arts and support the cultivation of creativity in South Carolina. We envision a South Carolina where the arts are valued and all people benefit from a variety of creative experiences.

A state agency created by the South Carolina General Assembly in 1967, the SCAC works to increase public participation in the arts through grants, direct programs, staff assistance and partnerships in artist development, arts industry, arts learning, creative placemaking, and folklife and traditional arts. Headquartered in Columbia, S.C., the SCAC is funded by the state of South Carolina, by the federal government through the National Endowment for the Arts, and other sources.
