Sean Gresh, Arts Magazine on Philip Mullen
Excerpted from a review of exhibition at David Findlay Gallery, NYC, 1978
To complement his more focused approach to painting, in 1975 Mullen began doing silkscreen prints. He adapted his systematic painting techniques to a silkscreen process. Using specially hand-made paper, Mullen has created an intricate, colorful pattern that he sometimes repeats through twenty and thirty paintings. The result: prints so uniquely “woven” they have a meditative feeling about them – as if one were in the presence of intricately woven tapestries resembling oriental scrolls.
