Dieses Gesicht weigert sich, konsumierbar zu sein. Es ist schön – nicht im Sinne von Mode, sondern im Sinne von Wahrheit.

New Faces 2 ist Teil meiner gleichnamigen Serie, in der ich die Darstellung schwarzer Körper in der Mode hinterfrage. Ausgangspunkt sind jene somalischen Models, die als „new faces“ inszeniert werden – entdeckt in Lagern, vermarktet auf internationalen Laufstegen. Diese Biografien zeigen, wie Identität in der Modeindustrie zur Währung wird und zugleich alte koloniale Codes fortschreibt.

Meine Malerei bricht die Oberfläche der Modebilder auf und entwirft eine Sprache, in der Schönheit nicht Konsumgut ist, sondern Ausdruck von Präsenz.

This face refuses to be consumable. It is beautiful - not in the sense of fashion, but in the sense of truth.

New Faces 2 is part of my series of the same name, in which I scrutinise the representation of black bodies in fashion. The starting point are those Somali models who are staged as "new faces" - discovered in camps, marketed on international catwalks. These biographies show how identity becomes a currency in the fashion industry and at the same time perpetuates old colonial codes.

My painting breaks open the surface of fashion images and creates a language in which beauty is not a consumer good, but an expression of presence.
