This piece features the photograph of an unnamed young dutch immigrant residing the detention center at Ellis Island in 1905. In this work, her photo, taken by a Augustus Sherman, a (male) senior clerk for the bureau of immigration, is infused with color and enlarged, bringing her into the present tense and amplifying both her vulnerability and courage. She is set against the backdrop of richly layered collage using historical imagery and modern mark making. The collage roots her to the past as well as reminds the viewer of our shared human history and humanity.
