From the first time I saw this photo the sitter looked regal to me - that her hat was more of a crown than a decoration and her straight back spoke of a regimented upbringing. I used purple for both her hat and her shawl in honor of that. I added the deep magenta hue to her skin and the emphasis mark to give her power and establish her as educated, and that seemed to accentuate her silence. The last piece was giving her voice - I even shaped the collage piece to her slips to ensure that no thoughts would escape unspoken. I really want to hear what she has to say.
