This is the work of Nara based artist Matsui Seito from Hozomi Kiln in Nara.
The box is signed by Shimizu Kosho, renowned chief priest of Todai-ji Temple in Nara.
Shimizu Kosho gained renown for his luminous, elegant, and uninhibited expressions in calligraphy, painting, and ceramic art. His poetry, calligraphy, paintings, and pottery were all exquisitely crafted, earning him a distinguished reputation in his lifetime and continuing to be revered in contemporary times. He passed away at the age of 88 in 1999.
Shimizu Kosho was born Shimizu Mutsuji in Shikama-gun, Hyogo prefecture in 1911. Joining Hogo-in at Todai-ji Temple in 1927, he trained under Shimizu Kimitoshi to become a formal Buddhist monk. Before eventually becoming the Head Priest he was sent to China during the war from which he returned in 1946. After serving two consecutive terms he retired and became the senior monk at Todai-ji Temple and was awarded the Buddhist Missionary Culture Award.
