This chawan is a fine example of Utsutsugawa-yaki, a historic ceramic style first produced in the late 17th century in the village of Yagami, Nagasaki Prefecture. The bowl features the hallmark sumigasashi (“ink-flow”) decoration, characterized by swirling iron slip over a reddish stoneware clay body, covered in a translucent crackled glaze. The soft curves, refined thin walls, and flowing brushwork reflect both Korean-influenced Karatsu-yaki techniques and the aesthetic sophistication for which Utsutsugawa ware was historically praised.
