This black hira chawan (shallow, wide-mouthed tea bowl) is attributed to Raku Sōnyū, 5th-generation head of the Raku family kiln.
(Real name: Ichinyū 一入; later took the name Sōnyū 宗入 upon succession)
It bears a box inscription by Ryōryōsai, 9th-generation grand master of the Omotesenke tea school, confirming its provenance and significance within the context of Japanese tea culture.
The bowl’s form and glaze are characteristic of Sōnyū’s refined and restrained aesthetic, suited for the wabi-cha style of the Senke lineage.
