You needn't be a child to understand or enjoy ‘WILDflowers,’ but in order to enjoy the beauty, the fun and serendipity of a summer’s day, playing in a field of wildflowers, it’s an absolute necessity to be able to set aside your adult and rediscover your childlike imagination.
WILDFlowers was created over a period of three months, literally from the ground up, on a 12’ sheet of loose canvas, crawling around on the studio floor for days, layering rich base textures. Slowly over the next couple months, as I would allow myself to fall back into time, dripping fantastical textures, abstract vines and flower shapes would appear, many of them wanting to dance and play.
My job was to bring them to life, to give them a place to express themselves; a big playground. I spent a lot of time in there with them. Some of my happiest times. Much of this earlier creation time was wet on wet. It had to be in order for the 'gorgeousness' to occur, the magical blending of paint I could never paint myself - I was there as a facilitator of sorts.
After the painting had reached a place where I was satisfied with base richness and gross detail, it was time to pull it up off the floor, loose canvas, and hang it so I can start hand painting (actually palette knife is more my style, brushes tend to take the spontaneity out of the process for me). I prefer quick deliberate dramatic strokes.
There are literally thousands of flowers and bugs and whatever it is that you see, that make WILDflowers come alive. The beauty of this painting, like a field of Wildflowers, is that you can visit that field on any given day and it will never be the same - you will always see something different and it will always make you feel different. And, the less adult you bring along with you, the more you will be able to enJOY the experience.
EnJOY.
NOTE: This is a detail section of the larger painting as you will see in the other images.
