ARTIST COMMENTS:
What do you feel?
The beauty of abstract: everyone feels, sees something … different.
I started, as I often do, working with texture and color to see where the painting will lead me until it provides direction; hints of where it wants to take me.
Usually, after a few days and a few dozen layers, something comes up.
In this case a rich tapestry of shapes seemed to suggest an urban landscape of sorts, busy with many details and multi-directional elements moving about with lots of energy.
However …
A funny thing happened. These odd square yellow and light green squares started to appear, subtle at first then becoming more pronounced, which led me to believe nature was trying to edge itself into this urban setting.
Well, it was GAGA TIME!
What, you might ask, is Gaga Time?
Lady Gaga is who I call on when I need to blast into a painting with LOTS of gusto and courage. I use her frequently, especially in times like these, after working a painting for weeks and feeling the need to pull it together with dramatic BLACK line work which could – in just five minutes - destroy all that hard work if I blow it. Yet, if I don’t step into the painting with all I’ve got, then it’s just not me … and Gaga of course.
Bringing these two elements together, urban and a field of flowers, blends Urban and a Prairie, the best of both worlds.
Didn't think I had much of a chance competing against thousands of well-established artists from all parts of the world, but you never know, so I entered Urban Prairie in the prestigious Annual 'Artist Magazine's' Art Competition.
This is a big deal! I entered mid-summer and just let it go, not thinking I had much of a chance.
WHAT A SURPRISE, when I received an email, congratulating me as a finalist in the abstract division. They were going to devote a half-page feature plus a half-page ad in their equally prestigious magazine, 'Southwest Art.'
