Blog # 3 Meaningful
The word meaningful, as an adjective, is defined as “communicating something that is not directly expressed.” In 1995, I was looking to create a meaningful statement through my art. The result was a painting I called “The Burning Bush”. The idea was inspired from a play I had seen which revolved around the Burning Bush in the Book of Exodus. God told Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egypt and into Canaan. My desire was to capture the power in the light that was emanating from the bush based on what Moses might have seen or felt. I was obsessed in creating an image of that grandeur.
I remember once I got started, I could not stop. I painted all night and into the next day until it was completed. It was a large 4’x 8’ canvas. I could have kept going as my creative juices flowed like a river. It did not matter what color I used, it all seemed to fit perfectly. I remember being so tired after finishing the painting that I literally fell asleep on the floor. I
Painting 4’ x 8’ acrylic on canvas had never felt so satisfied with a painting before. All I kept thinking about was sharing it with my friends who were artists as well.
Eventually the painting was sold to a collector. And though I have tried to buy it back since then, I have been unsuccessful in doing so. According to the collector, the painting is just too meaningful in his life and to his collection. Though I may not have the original, I can at least enjoy its beauty by re-creating the artwork through a print. a pillow, and a scarf/shall.
