Blog # 17 Recall
Recall brings a fact or event or a situation back into one’s mind to recount it to others; remember. I recall the sculptor, Alexander Calder, who died in 1976. He did what is called kinetic, (in motion) sculptures powered by motors or air currents. The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis Minnesota had a Calder sculpture called the Spinner. It was placed by the front entrance. As the wind would blow the top would spin. At night, the base would disappear, because it was painted black. On very dark and windy nights, I would drive to the Walker to lie on my back staring at the movement of the Spinner. The sky would be dancing with different shapes. I would try to sketch the shapes as this sculpture would move. I was like a kid with a spinning top each spine was so different against the dark sky. I used those sketches to create my painting, “Midnight”, painted in 1976. I am still fascinated by the night sky. It is not black but appears to have many shapes and colors. I see movement that is never defined by any one shape but several that also have a flow with a texture. I recall the sculpture when it was on display. A very magical setting. “The Spinner”
