“A toothbrush is an object that comes in many varieties and shapes and is used to rejuvenate and make more aesthetically pleasing our means with communicating and consuming.” Robert Redfearn’s “Toothbrush” is a model of an analog toothbrush, that is sourced from public domain images, but not after any brand. Redfearn’s sculpture is “reflective of our modern era, so it has design embellishes that call to mind the time in which we live, but none of the electric or digital additions one might find in a contemporary household.”
“A toothbrush represents the rituals we have to commence and draw close on our collective daily routines, an act of self-care and good hygiene, an act we all do but often in solitude, and an intrinsically aesthetic activity whether to contend with the gleam of our teeth or the smell of our breath.”
About the artist:
Robert Redfearn is interested in manipulating physical materials in an increasingly digital world. He combines digital fabrication with traditional crafts in the pursuit of sculpture. Robert’s art explores themes of consumerist culture in late-stage capitalism, material artifice of the 21st century, being a leftist idealist in the United States of America, trompe l'oeil, and exploring the sublime beauty of nature through art in a post-industrial society spending more time online than outside. He believes in the transformative power of art and its ability to enrich our lives, and is inspired by Robert Fillou’s quote, “art is what makes life more interesting than art.” For much of Redfearn’s work and inspiration, he looks for absurdity, whimsy, and the sublime to channel and connect with the world around him.
