"Birds" by Richard Whitehill, was featured in the Art in Roanoke 2017 to 2018 temporary exhibition. The stainless and mild steel piece is 12' tall and according to the artist is a "semi-abstract kinetic piece. It has three swirling shapes rotating on a cantilever. The moving Parts turn in several directions, coming close but never hitting each other, while catching and reflecting light".
About the artist:
Whitehill is a former Professor of Orthopaedic and Neurosurgery who has been building steel sculpture for about 25 years and has focused on kinetic work for the last five. His works are in many private homes. In the public realm he has exhibited in temporary shows and is in permanent collections in Charlottesville, Boulder, Key West and other locations. The fourth Art in Roanoke temporary exhibition which was from 2017 to 2018, presented nine pieces of various media with the theme “City in Motion.” This exhibition explored Roanoke’s continual progress, movement, and innovation. This exhibition was the second temporary show featured in Elmwood Park.
