Richard Delaney is a Canadian painter based in Port Dover, Ontario.
With a lifelong dedication to art-making and more than three decades of experience as an educator, Delaney brings both technical discipline and a deeply personal vision to his work. Over the course of his career, he has taught high school, university, and adult learners, while continuing to refine his own practice as a painter.
Primarily self-taught, Delaney has developed his skills through years of independent study, studio practice, and formal coursework at Brock University. His artistic influences are wide-ranging, with inspiration drawn from artists such as Chuck Close, Jean-Léon Gérôme, Robert Bateman, Salvador Dalí, and Gerhard Richter.
Working mainly in oil and acrylic, Delaney creates realist and representational paintings on canvas, masonite, and wood panel. His subject matter is shaped by an enduring interest in nature, place, memory, portraiture, still life, birds, and figurative work, often informed by his experiences of travel and popular culture.
Delaney’s paintings emerge through a process that combines observation, sketching, photographic reference, and imagination. The result is work that seeks not only to represent the visible world, but also to capture atmosphere, character, and emotional resonance.
