Soaring Unbroken by Eva Agus - Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma, Image 1.
I am a multidisciplinary artist and five-times survivor of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma (<1 in 100,000 prevalence). In 2021, I lost my life to this rare disease, literally and figuratively. I flatlined when re-irradiation complications sent me into multiple organ failures. My life as a Civil Engineer also ended as my condition limits my hearing, speech, and mobility. Instead, my days revolve around tube-feeding, rehabilitation therapy, and cancer treatments. Art became a meditation on the fragility of life and a celebration of resilience. “Soaring Unbroken” features a coastal trail nearby where encounters with majestic birds became reminders to soar above my pain. Incorporating ancestral wisdom in Indonesian batik patterns of my heritage, I reclaimed my lost identity and purpose. I started painting with my non-dominant hand to regain mobility. Creating healing art, I yearn to build creative resources for mid-age rare disease survivors and long-term caregivers. Since 2002, I am witness to multiple emerging treatments for my rare disease, each producing higher survival and better quality of life. My rare disease journey attests to medical research enabling patients to not only survive, but contribute to society. My hope is for each rare disease patient, caregiver, and medical professional to soar unbroken. Birth Year: 1978
