Hidden Clarity by Lena Smith - Granular Corneal Dystrophy, Image 1.
My art is shaped by my experience with Granular Corneal Dystrophy, an eye condition that causes visual distortions and blurriness. It’s like looking through a foggy window—shapes and lights are visible, but details play hide and seek. This condition pushes me to rely on intuition and other senses to piece together life and art, transforming what could be a limitation into a unique superpower that adds wonder to my vision. Owls, with their exceptional sensory abilities, inspire me. Their rare and elusive nature reflects my own journey with this rare eye disease. This art piece captures my experience, using the owl’s colors and feathers to represent my blurry, disturbed vision. Just as owls navigate with heightened senses beyond sight, I use my other senses to navigate my world, transforming visual challenges into sources of inspiration. When I paint, I start with my fingers, feeling the paint to guide the flow. I use brushes, plastic wrap, or even random items to create unique textures. As my vision changes, I increasingly rely on finger painting and muscle memory, turning challenges into vibrant, creative reflections of my journey. Birth Year: 1975
