Crow’s Armor by Lia Ottinot - Sickle Cell Anemia, Image 1.
The piece I have submitted is a wearable sculpture called “Crow’s Armor”. The shapes are inspired by tribal/Indigenous jewelry. Since crows represent transformation and positive change, the concept for this piece is advocating positivity to a condition that many describe as daunting. The empty cage shown on the back of the armor reveals how one can become limitless and no longer feel trapped because of their condition. This piece highlights my advocacy for those that suffer from Sickle Cell Anemia. I spread awareness of this disease through blood drives and work effortlessly to uplift the spirit of my fellow Sickle Cell warriors. Crow’s Armor is a shield of protection for warriors and epitomizes our strength. When people in the community know and understand our disease, it alleviates some of the unneeded stress. At times, Sickle Cell patients are labeled as frauds and that we pretend to have pain because we do not look “sick”. This piece also symbolizes my personal freedom to create a unique piece of art that symbolizes my positive outlook on life as I am liberated from any shame that my disease my bring. It emphasizes that we are strong with the protection of the Crow’s Armor. Birth Year: 2003
