When I was in second grade I was diagnosed with Fragile X Syndrome. Fragile X Syndrome is a rare condition that affects fewer than 200,000 cases per year in the United States. This affects many members of my family. Fragile X Syndrome is a genetic condition causing intellectual disability and other conditions. Fragile X Syndrome causes mild to severe intellectual disability.
The inspiration for my art piece is the cactus garden near Stanford University. I have been to Stanford University a few times to participate in Fragile X research. This research helps doctors better understand and treat people with Fragile X Syndrome.
I advocate by attending fundraisers such as the Fragile X walk, a tip night at a restaurant, and a Fragile X bowling party.
I think my art piece represents diversity because I used colors that I rarely use. The plants are also growing in different angles and have a different color than what you would see plants as. That is why this represents the diversity within Fragile X Syndrome and other rare diseases.
