Created during summer 2014 as the arts element for the University of Nebraska at Omaha SummerWorks program. 150 plus high school students helped to paint this mural over the span of 2.5 months. The design incorporates three major Hanscom Park structures; two historical and one present day. The central image, taken from an historic postcard, is of a rose bower. It is flanked, to the left (south) by a distant image of the historical conservatory with closer, star shaped planting arrangement, and to the right (north) by a present day rendering of the Hanscom lagoon with surrounding trees. Roses flow to the south and forward onto a 3’ concrete retaining wall. Special attention was given in the design process to integrating impediments to viewing the mural as a whole. The rose bower path masks a garage door, which may be viewed adequately either fully closed, with path and figures present, or fully open, with only the bower showing. The surface of the lagoon imagery is on an extreme slope and is partially blocked by existing trees; painted trees, viewed close and at a distance, were chosen specifically to “blend” with these impediments.
