This is one of my favourites in my whimsical Teacup Tweets collection. In this painting, a local native Grey Fantail poses within a traditional still life composition including mandarins, white and blue patterned porcerlain and a Kangaroo Paw flower (an unusual native flower that is the floral symbol of the state of Western Australia). The rich, patterned background, strong lighting and use of complementary colours, creates a bold and beautiful image with punch and personality. Just like a Grey Fantail! I painted part of this during a demonstration at the Watercolour Society of WA's International Exhibition, so an element of its resolution comes from discussions and feedback from visitors to that show.
