Simple Cells consists of sculptures made from a one-piece pattern. A flat plane is strategically folded and cut, then opened. It is then re-folded and tucked by making edges meet without overlapping, until the cell settles into its strongest and most balanced shape. Each cell pattern possesses a multitude of possibilities of what could be its final formation. One pattern can create several sibling cells. Though each cell emerges from the same process, every cell’s final structure is singular. It is an exercise in symmetry, individuality, and gravitational balance. A study of the tension of positive versus negative space and what can be discovered in-between. Just like one can see shapes in clouds or inkblots the observer can similarly explore the nature of these Simple Cells. Meditate on them as they spin and enable your subconscious thoughts to materialize. Use them to connect and build your own personal visions as if these Simples Cells exist at the molecular level and contain the potential to become any kind of matter that is within the viewer’s imagination.
