Glen Kaino’s Arch was commissioned in 2008 by the Heinz Endowments to celebrate Pittsburgh’s 250th anniversary. Arch is a large wood, metal, and paint sculpture that is designed to look like it is composed of steel. Kaino used the bridges of Pittsburgh as inspiration to create a new form, representing the city and welcoming visitors to the airport.
Arch is primarily yellow, with gray as a prevalent accent color. This sculpture is positioned in a slightly bent position, with its weight forward and knees bent. One hand rests on the robot’s knee, while the other reaches out to guests. Iconic Pittsburgh bridges are scattered around the robot’s body, and it appears the sculpture is composed of the steel pieces of these bridges.
