As you face the Casino with your back to the highway, this pole is the second from the right end of the building. Carved in the style of the Kwakwaka'wakw people of Vancouver Island, this pole represents each major realm of nature - the Forest World, the Sky World, and the Undersea World - with images of fearsome supernatural beings. Destruction followed in their wake, but to the cautious and wise they could also bring good fortune. In the Forest lived Dzonuk'wa, the bottom figure on this pole. This "Wild Woman of the Woods" existed in the mythology of all the coastal peoples. The S'Klallam people know her as Slap'u. Even today, our Sasquatch stories have their origin with her. Large, slow, but powerful, she brought tragedy to the unwary, though for a clever person, she could be a source of great wealth.
