- Totem Pole
A great leader of the S'Klallam, Lord James Balch was chief of the village near Dungeness. A people who lived almost entirely from the sea, the S'Klallam built weathertight homes from cedar along the beaches. They finished and hunted for seals and whales. When settlers finally drove the S'Klallam from most of their lands, Lord James Balch led his people to buy land that could not be taken from them, close to a traditional village site at Dungeness. The settlement was named Jamestown in his honor. Along with Lord James Balch on this pole are Eagle and Salmon, the two crest figures chosen by the Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe.
