A song by Paul Winter was part of the inspiration for this quilt. Some of the images were fermenting in my brain and then the song Ancient Voices kept coming into my head and it brought the images together in a cohesive message. Some of the images from ancient time illustrate man-kind's attempt to understand who we are in relation to our known universe. These objects were intended by our ancestors to help them in their afterlife or to be a lasting monument for future generations to know of their existence and their important status in society. The four sacred mountains, Denali, Uluru, Fujiyama, and Devil's Tower represent North, South, East and West. Four of earth's threatened species are creatures who once roamed the earth in much greater numbers and we determine their survival or extinction. The bristle cone pine tree is one of the oldest living things on earth, and even after it dies, it stands for many years as a symbol of endurance, strength and perseverance. In this collage, the human-created spiritual objects and structures, the animals, and our awe-inspiring landscape are all ancient voices from the past which are trying to speak to us today and which we need to listen to carefully in order to make our earth a better place for millennia to come.
