I took this haunting photo of the elephant skull at the entrance to Tarangire National Park in Tanzania in 1989. The skull was a strong statement regarding the devastation of a magnificent species. In 1900, it is estimated that elephants in Africa numbered between 5 – 10 million. By 1979, that had dwindled to 1.3 million and ten years later, to only 600,000.
