The Greek word 'eidolon' means both a phantasm, and a kernel of an idea, like the acorn, buckeye or walnut seeds of the great trees of Ohio. This sculpture is created to convey ideas and references to the subjects studied in the Clippinger Buildings: chemistry, physics, geology, geography, bio-sciences, and forestry and the like.

EIDOLON, in stainless steel, is primarily but not entirely, formed in reference to the chemical and physics aspects of the disciplines studied in the Clippinger buildings. To represent the more geologic and geographical earth oriented sciences a wonderful, unique and monolithic specimen of Canadian granite which was brought to southern Ohio the during either the Illinoisan or Wisconsin glaciation events. Texturally it is a migmatite or high-grade gneiss stone. It is 12 feet long by 4.5 ft. x 4.5 ft. weighing around 38,000 pounds. Mounted vertically on the same grassy field as EIDOLON:, towards the eastern end of the space.
