ARTIST STATEMENT
Each year countless lives are being taken not only by cancer but also financially devastated by the cost of fighting it. The burden is so immense that even those who survive often find themselves stripped of everything, with the prospect of recovery overshadowed by the threat of losing their homes, savings, and security. Ceramics has a dual nature of strength and frailty. The workability of ceramics reflects the uncontrollable growth of cancer cells, while the process of firing, where clay transforms under intense heat, can symbolize the body’s battle against the disease. The cracks and imperfections in ceramics, often caused by heat and moisture, really emphasizes the emotional and physical toll of cancer on both patients and families.
