It seems since going on safari in Kenya in early 2020, I have been infatuated with wild animals. I have always been a lover of elephants because it is a symbol of my sorority Delta Sigma Theta, but zebras?
“Soulful Serene Safari” starts with the elephant and the zebra. I purchased the panels because they were pretty. After languishing in my studio for years, I finally had an inspiration on how I could use them.
Obviously the elephant and zebra are abstract and not realistic. That made it easy to build a quilt around them. The palette turned out to be somewhat serene even though the animals are wild. I added a pieced border of colorful African fabrics to capture the wildness of the animals. A final border makes the quilt measure 51x62 inches.
I pieced “Soulful Serene Safari” on my Janome sewing machine. My friend Maxine Moore quilted elephants in the background to carry out the theme of the quilt.
I used fuchsia African fabric on the back. There is a hanging sleeve for easy display and a label that documents the quilt.
I normally sign my quilts on the front, but because the fabrics were too dark for my signature to show up, I added a printed label.
This quilt is one-of-a-kind.
