I was inspired by an old beech tree in High Beech, Epping Forest. It stood solidly, but a hollow carcass. I wanted to capture the gnarled texture but felt there was something more powerful than just a dead tree. I imagine it being a mythological structure joining the wintery cold earth to hell or the underworld.
