Nicky Gabris creates art through various disciplines, but she is primarily a painter. She studied Fine Art Painting at Loughborough University (2004-2007), which she explored working in textiles, printmaking, and oil painting.
Following graduation, she worked briefly in Film and TV as an Art Director and a props maker in the Art Department. She has taught Art at secondary school and completed an Art and Design PGCE, during this period she had her two children. She has continued to produce and exhibit her own work.
Nicky Gabris experiments between figurative representations and abstracted experiences, but her work remains very autobiographical. Her process is not to find beauty, but to rid her from the ugliness, anger, and intense emotions of life. She believes painting gives her moments of clarity, as actions of pleasure and a place to transfer her thoughts. Upon completion, the piece becomes like a ghostly memory which fades over time.
The work is abstract and deeply personal, expressing feelings, memories, or experiences. Each one starts like a diary, documenting relationships, work, and life. The style typically starts with bright colours, then darkened so only a flashes of neon blue or cerise pink are slightly visible. The artist likes having hidden messages, only known to her. Sometimes, she starts with a quote or an experience that she wants to capture in the overall piece and the mood is built through the multiple layers of the paint. Her goal is to produce work which other people can feel a similar emotional connection whilst she continues to purge her own experiences.
Statement
My paintings are a deeply personal exploration of the human experience through the use of colour, form and texture. With an expressive style that draws inspiration from my own life and the natural world. I hope to create works that are both raw and vulnerable, yet also celebratory and joyful.
