The Gulf Fritillary and the Passionflower developed in a dance of co-evolution. Found throughout the Southeast, Central America and (since the 1870s) California, the Gulf Fritillary seeks out the Passionflower in this beautiful cycle of life. I saw this butterfly on a passionflower vine in a parking lot near the Natural History Museum in Balboa Park. This collage painting was created using hand-painted paper embellished with original stencil designs and hand-cut stamps. The ephemera includes maps and tourist literature about Balboa Park, maps of San Diego, sheet music, shopping lists, old textbook pages, napkins and mulberry paper. Wired on the back and ready to hang.
