Our mark is our thumbprint that is identifiable and unique to us. This piece is not about what is seen but what is discovered and remembered. In part, it’s about the enormity of being. Tomorrow, the sun will come up. Grass grows on a manicured lawn or a crack in the pavement. We are all small “things” in this world of ours. So we colour our hair, pierce and decorate our bodies and spray graffiti to stake a small piece of real estate in what we call life. We leave our mark behind. Outside the lines is about staking my place, one artwork at a time and connecting with others through visual language.
The process involves layering paint, collage, paint and more paint, layers and layers with colours, shapes and designs that are scraped, sanded, scratched and dug into, repainted, revealing and leaving bits of the past, the history of each layer. A story emerges that blends this history with the final design, which is rich in texture. The beauty is in the discovery, the rich surface and the hidden bits that can only be seen by getting in close and exploring its secrets.
