ARTIST'S NOTES
I have been down Montevallo Road many a time but one afternoon I saw a field of color to my right, I turned around immediately and went down a small alley. As I got out I peered over the fence. There was
gathered beneath me were these exquisite poppies of reds, oranges, and paperwhites. In the garden was a young man tending the flowers who was later known to me as David Pyler.
After asking permission to draw the garden I spent hours each day looking over the fence drawing and having many conversations with David about art, gardening and life.
I do not know whether it was the poppies or the tender soul of David, who did not belong to this fast world, that made the early hours painting there some of my most enjoyable painting experiences.
Some of the works done in David's Garden:
- "The Martin House at David's Garden/Two Houses at David's Garden"
- "Poppies at David’s Garden": "Consider the lilies of field. Solomon and all his glory was not arrayed as one of these."
- "David's Garden with the Cedar Tree" (a large pastel)
- "Was it a Morning Like This": Overall picture of the road and Garden at sunrise.
