Often depicted as a journey, transitions between one point and another involve movement between areas of illumination, gray, and dark representing despair, decisions, waiting, and hope.
In this vintage work of Miriam's done in 1960, was a period of transition from student to professional working artist. It was also a dark period of knowns and unknowns in life like we all experience. In this work, "Figures in a Blue Landscape", Miriam depicts life and new year transitions in this moody but hopeful scene.
On the right side is a figure on a road leading from/to a darkened landscape. We don't know if the figure is going or coming. To the left center of the work is a group of people sitting and listening to someone talking to them in a lighter, more hopeful area where the light is shining from the distant hill with three trees.
Maybe the person standing and talking is coming from this lighter upper area and sharing their story with those who are seated? Maybe those seated will find the courage to venture toward the light and hope?
