Buckminster Fuller was a visiting professor at SIU-Edwardsville when he designed the dome for the campus Religious Center, now renamed the Center for Spirituality & Sustainability and standing symmetrically astride the true planet Earth's "90th" western meridian of longitude. In 1971 I attended the standing room only building dedication where Fuller described the dome as a “true planetarium” and “a miniature Earth.” He stated that one goes inside the dome “to go outside one’s self
and into the center of the Earth and thence outward to the stars.”
