A Leon Hermant sculpted bronze bas-relief portrait of Edward Coles, the second Governor of Illinois, 1822-1826, is featured on the 1928 art deco limestone memorial in Valley View Cemetery. Edward Coles, an abolitionist, won the 1822 gubernatorial election as the candidate of the anti-slavery forces. He helped defeat the call for a constitutional convention to consider the legalization of slavery in Illinois.

Leon Hermant(1866-1936) was born in France, educated in Europe and came to America in 1904 to work on the French Pavilion at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis.
