Although plein air painting compels the artist to work quickly in order not to chase shadows in the constantly changing light, this was not the problem I was facing on this December morning. Rather it was the extreme cold and the lack of color in the winter landscape that was the challenge. I relied on my palette knife to lay down swaths of improvised colors to capture this view of the Liberal Arts Bridge in Forest Park.
