Kozol is a Visiting Assistant Professor at Pratt Institute and a member of the faculty at the 92NY School of the Arts, NY. Kozol received an MFA from the School of Visual Arts, NY, and a BA from Connecticut College. She is a recipient of an NEA Visual Arts Fellowship for Painting, a Skowhegan Drawing Grant at NYSS and the Bill Prize at Connecticut College. She has been awarded residencies at DNA, Provincetown; the Clipperton Project, North Sea, Scotland; Virginia Center for Creative Arts, Amherst, VA; the Constance Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts, Ithaca, NY; and Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Kozol has exhibited her work nationally for over three decades. Solo exhibits include If a Tree Falls, 350 Bleecker Gallery; TreeHouse, Courthouse Gallery, Lake George Arts Project; Teatown Lake Reservation; and Weber Fine Arts. Her work has been included in exhibitions at the New York Studio School, The Painting Center, Galerie Protégé, Kenise Barnes Fine Art, Project Room 88, Kathryn Markel Fine Arts, Alexander Gallery, DFN, and Weill Art Gallery. Kozol’s paintings were featured in the movies A Birders Guide to Everything, 2013, and Damsels in Distress, 2011. Her paintings are in numerous public and private collections including the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency at the Department of the Treasury, the Pfizer Corporation, Deutsche Bank, and the Bellagio Hotel, Las Vegas. Kozol lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

An American landscape painter, Melanie Kozol is known for her evocative paintings of the natural world. She looks for archetypal formations in the environment to explore light, color, and atmosphere. Kozol probes the boundaries between representation and abstraction while remaining firmly rooted in the world we know. Working from plein air studies, photographic documentation, and memory, Kozol re-imagines the environment through the painting process. Her landscape paintings and drawings are infused with memory and the experience of being in nature.
