Years ago, I was fortunate enough to travel to Italy and visit the Vatican. In St. Peters Basilica I was floored when I saw the marble sculpture of the Pieta by Michaelangelo. While I had seen it in textbooks before seeing it in person. was such a different experience than a photo. The marble stone seemed so soft and gentle. The image really conveyed the sense of devotion and eternal sadness of loss. I do not paint people, so for years I struggled with how I might render his masterpiece in my own way. Then one day I suddenly realized what I needed to do.
