Superficially this is a Still Life painting. What we are actually looking at are flowers that are mostly white (mostly hopeful for the future as artistic license but alternatively representing Caucasians in the forefront of southwest culture). These are in a vase that would have been of European design representing the British influence/heritage with a backdrop of a traditional Spanish fabric pattern which recognizes the Spanish conquistadors whose influence still shows throughout the southern states. Around the base are squash and pottery still in use today that descended from the tribes which originally occupied (and still do) the land of the present day Southwest United States.
