Part of the Ollin Yoliztli Calaca Series. Masks created over the duration of 3-4 years. While creating this collection, the artist developed and perfected his own style of painting for the calaca masks.
Ollin Yoliztli is a Phoenix based dance group that performs traditional Mexican Folklore dances. Cultural Coalition has partnered with them for decades, educating the public and keeping Mexican traditions alive within the community.
Calaca mask with off-white painted base. Top border of eyes outlined in a thick pink line that extends towards the forehead near the eyebrows. Eyebrows painted in dark blue with light blue swirls above on each side. Orange details near the blue swirls. Thick, pink, zig-zag line on the center of each cheek. Light blue line that is slightly rounded sits just below the pink zig-zag line. Small orange swirls above the pink zig-zag line. Nostrils painted in dark blue. Outer border of teeth outlined in pink, inner border outlined in dark blue. Pink, triangle-shaped line on the chin with a green dot on the center.
