Part of the Ollin Yoliztli Calaca Series. Masks created over the duration of 3-4 years. While creating this collection, the artist developed and perfected his own style of painting for the calaca masks.
Ollin Yoliztli is a Phoenix based dance group that performs traditional Mexican Folklore dances. Cultural Coalition has partnered with them for decades, educating the public and keeping Mexican traditions alive within the community.
Calaca mask with off-white painted base. Designs painted with blue, purple, orange, pink, and red color scheme. Lines painted in a zig-zag on the lower half of the face, below the eyes; blue and orange on the cheeks and chin and red near the mouth. Filigree shaped eyebrows painted in purple. Blue spear-shaped design painted between the eyebrows. Purple details on the nostrils and the outer border of teeth. Pink dots below each eye and on each side of the mouth. Three dots on the chin painted in red and orange.
