Part of the Ollin Yoliztli Calaca Series. Masks created over the duration of 3-4 years. While creating this collection, the artist developed and perfected his own style of painting for the calaca masks.
Ollin Yoliztli is a Phoenix based dance group that performs traditional Mexican Folklore dances. Cultural Coalition has partnered with them for decades, educating the public and keeping Mexican traditions alive within the community.
Calaca mask with off-white painted base. Orange, blue, and purple color scheme. Border of eyes painted in orange and outlines in dark blue with four white dots inside. Thin, swirly lines painted around the face. Blue lines on the forehead and cheeks, purple lines on the chin and forehead. Heart-shaped purple line that isn’t fully closed on the center of the forehead. Border of teeth outlined in purple. Purple nose tip. Short, pink brush strokes above the mouth.
