Part of the Ollin Yoliztli Calaca Series. Masks created over the duration of 3-4 years. While creating this collection, the artist developed and perfected his own style of painting for the calaca masks.
Ollin Yoliztli is a Phoenix based dance group that performs traditional Mexican Folklore dances. Cultural Coalition has partnered with them for decades, educating the public and keeping Mexican traditions alive within the community.
Calaca mask with off-white painted base. Red and blue color scheme, with small pink and purple details. Two large sections of forehead painted in blue, swirling at the center, creating a heart in the off-white space. Red triangular shapes for eyebrows. Blue cluster on each side of the cheek with and off-white swirl in the middle. Purple nose tip. Top border of teeth outlined in pink, inner border outlined in purple. Small purple stroke marks above and below the teeth. Blue eye-shaped line on the chin with a red oval in the center and a green gem. Eight gems on the forehead. Red gem on each cheek and each side of the mouth.
